Ryan Johnston – Surveillance

Ryan Johnston has been a private investigator in Colorado, specializing in surveillance since 1984. He still goes out on surveillance to this day. He began his career with RA Heales and Associates as a trainee and after 16 years went out on his own, creating the company Night Moves of Denver. He was eventually asked if he wanted to purchase RA Heales and Associates, which he did. The two companies merged and rebranded into Colorado Private Investigations, LLC. Ryan is also the past VP of Legislation for PPIAC as well as serving five years as President of PPIAC. Ryan remains on the legislative committee for PPIAC and is active at the state capitol talking to Colorado Representatives and Senators when it is warranted.During the time he worked for RA Heales and Associates, Ryan was also a volunteer fireman.He is a recipient of the Investigator of the Year award, Lifetime Achievement Award and Lifetime Member award from PPIAC. He is also a member of NCISS and feels strongly about the contributions of both associations to our profession. Ryan still loves the challenge of surveillance even after all these years.

Marcy Phelps – How to Search Public Records Like a Pro

As the founder and president of Marcy Phelps & Associates Inc., Marcy helps clients identify and prevent fraud through background investigations, financial asset research, and litigation support. She started her company in 2000 after earning a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Denver. A Certified Fraud Examiner and North Carolina licensed private investigator, Marcy shares her knowledge about investigative research through her blog and online courses.

Andrea Orozco – Subcontracting for Private Investigators

Andrea has been a professional investigator for 24 years. Her background includes internal investigations and surveillance for a major casino as well as over 20 years of in field surveillance experience. Andrea specializes in social media investigations, open source intelligence and cyber profiles and background investigations for insurance companies, corporations and family law attorneys. Andrea has spent the majority of her career working in Colorado and loves living in this beautiful state. As former VP of Training and Past President for the Professional Private Investigators Association of Colorado (PPIAC), she was responsible for the training and education of investigators throughout the state. Andrea is the Past Chairwoman of the Board and Past President of the national association for the investigative profession, National Council of Investigations and Security Services (NCISS). Andrea is one of only a few recipients of the renowned ‘Investigator of the Year Award’ and Top 22 of 2022 by PI Magazine. Andrea is committed to raising the standard of professionalism as well as protecting the legislative interests of investigators in Colorado and across the country.

Dean Beers – “PI Standards (Licensed or Unlicensed)”

Dean founded the agency in October of 1987. A longstanding career, and experience, that is rare in the industry. Since 2008 he has specialized, with his Wife Karen, in Expert Medicolegal Consultations and Legal Investigations nationwide in Personal Injury, Negligence & Death in Civil, Criminal and Probate litigation. He has provided many favorable expert consultations to the Colorado Public Defender and Alternate Defense Council attorneys, as well as several other states. Together they developed the Certified Forensic Death Investigator (CFDI) Program exclusively for Criminal Defense Investigators.Dean is a member, including board and committee member, of several associations, including Professional Private Investigators Association of Colorado, National Association of Legal Investigators, National Council of Investigation & Security Services, Criminal Defense Investigation Training Council, World Association of Detectives, and others.

Robert Orozco – Qualities of a Professional Investigator

Robert has been a professional investigator for over two decades. Robert is highly experienced and specializes in surveillance investigations for insurance companies, corporations, and family law attorneys. Robert utilizes his years of experience and knowledge to obtain the most factual information possible to help our clients create effective legal strategies, uncover fraud, resolve claims, and protect their assets and brand. Robert has trained investigators in mobile surveillance, how to use the latest surveillance equipment, and how-to-write effective and professional reports. In early 2010 Robert became involved and testified to defeat Colorado HB10-1012, a bill that would have eliminated surveillance in Colorado worker’s compensation investigations. Robert became President of the Professional Private Investigators Association of Colorado in November 2010. During his term as President, Robert was influential in introducing Colorado’s PI license bill. The bill would ultimately be passed into law after 36 years of previous attempts by PPIAC. Though Colorado’s PI law was discontinued as of 2021, Robert continues to encourage Colorado investigators to obtain PI licenses in other states to provide consumer confidence and to elevate the standards of professionalism for private investigators. Robert is the current Chair of the Board for the Professional Private Investigators Association of Colorado.

Robin Brown – Interviewing Basics

A seasoned law enforcement professional, professional investigator, and physical security expert with a successful history of security/safety consulting and solution development.  A proven history of corporate security management and the development of innovative risk management processes.  A licensed, bonded, insured, and certified Private Investigator serving the government, corporate, and private customers.  A Contracted Special Investigator handling sensitive background investigations for or on behalf of various Federal agencies or their contracted companies.  A highly rated teacher of physical security and law enforcement topics, and in post-graduate academic programs in Criminal Justice and Forensic Psychology.  An essential part of Criminal Defense Teams assisting lawyers and their defendants develop successful defense strategies with the Alternate Defense Counsel program in Colorado Department of Law.

Tan Smyth – Permissible Purposes and The Agency of Information Management

&  Report Writing 101 – When Spellcheck Is Not Enough

Tan Smyth has been conducting investigations in Colorado since 2006. Her areas of specialty include interviews/statements, OSINT, Due Diligence, and asset checks. She has held the following Board positions: Associate-at-Large, Director-at-Large, VP of Membership, and VP of Training.

As a USAF Veteran, she was stationed in the city of Berlin before and during the fall of the Wall. 

Tan recently rebranded under the name Dedicated Investigations, LLC, focusing on Workplace Misconduct, Due Diligence, and Attorney Support services. She enjoys training new investigators, and looks forward to what the next generation will bring to the field of professional investigations.
